The aim of this research is to look into a theory of semiotics with reference to some of the poems of B.M.T. Makobe. The study is concept analysis in nature, whereby Makobe's anthology will be analysed using semiotics theory. The researcher will demonstrate how signs and symbols in these poems are used. The researcher will acknowledge other authors' works especially those that researched on semiotics. The concept refers to words that are used as signs. In any Iiterary text, the relationship between the signifier (the sign) and the signified (the meaning or message contained in the sign) is as telling as could be ordinary day-to-day conversation. Titles of poems may function as signs. The word guinea fowl is a beautiful bird like chicken. Makobe used this title to symbolise young girls who are sexually active. There are also words that are used as signs e.g: Tsea senotlelo se. Senotlelo is a key which is used to loek or to unlock the door. But senotlelo in this poem symbolises the maturity, especially when one has reached twenty one years. The research consists of five chapters. Chapter One serves as an introduction of the dissertation and the following information about the research project is provided: • Research problem • Research questions • Rationale for the study • Objectives of the study • Significance of the study • Definition of concepts • Conceptual framework • Research design and methodology Chapter Two starts with conceptual framework. This chapter serves as the literature review of the study. Chapter Three comprises of an evaluation oflveduduetso ya Mesobonanana, based on semiotic theory. This chapter provides a critical analys1s of the data of the study. Chapter Four serves as the summary of all chapters making up this research findings and recommendations on the topic. Chapter Five will provides conclusion of the study.
