This study is based on the analysis of the theme of jealousy in the Tshivenḓa novels Bulayo ḽo ṱalifhaho and Mitsheṱo ya wa .The main aim of this research is to study the nature of jealousy, its causes, and its effects on people’s lives, as well as to identify ways that can be used to reduce or manage its impact on social relationships. The study further seeks to demonstrate that jealousy is not merely an individual emotional experience, but also a cultural and social phenomenon that can influence and transform social cohesion within communities. This study employs a qualitative research approach, where data is collected from secondary sources, particularly Tshivenḓa literary texts. Two novels, Bulayo ḽo ṱalifhaho (Magau, 1992) and Mitsheṱo ya wa (Magau, 1993), were selected as novels that reflect the lived experiences of the Vhavenḓa people, their social practices and the role of emotions within society. The data were analysed using thematic analysis, where themes were identified and organised based on similarities and relationships, alongside the use of open coding. The study is also grounded in Afrocentric Social Change, which suggests that human behaviour is influenced by individual thoughts and intentions. Therefore, people’s actions and patterns of living can be understood as outcomes of underlying thoughts, including feelings of jealousy. This social theory helps explain how jealousy develops and how it can disrupt interpersonal relationships and social unity. The findings of the study reveal that jealousy has significant consequences, including family disintegration, the emergence of conflict, the spread of falsehoods, and violent behaviours such as assault and even murder. These findings emphasise that jealousy is a serious social issue that requires careful attention within communities. The study therefore recommends developing strategies to educate and empower individuals about the importance of unity, trust, and emotional regulation to reduce the negative effects of jealousy. In conclusion, this study advances knowledge of culture and social relations among the Vhavenḓa people and provides a deeper understanding of how jealousy operates in everyday social life.
