dc.description.abstractThe research is based on the music that falls within the Vatsonga traditional songs. In this study, the researcher make a thorough analysis of Freddy Masingi's songs, commonly known as Matshwa Bemuda. Emphasis of this study is placed on the themes, values, messages and the language usage by the artist in his efforts to broaden Xitsonga language in the society. In this study the method of literary criticism which refers to the comparison and analysis, interpretation and evaluation of the work of art will be used. Chapter one This chapter gives an introduction of the study. It focuses on the background of the study which shows the present status of Xitsonga music, research problem, purpose of the study, research questions, literature review, research design, research methodology, significance of the study, definition of key concepts such as message and theme, delimitation of the study and conclusion. Chapter two This chapter critically analyses songs relating to Jim- goes- to- Joburg (Johannesburg) theme. On this theme focus is mainly on the difficulties faced by these individuals. Under this theme 4 songs are analysed.. Furthermore, the analysis of the songs whose themes are about a man who had been changed by unforeseen circumstances, commonly known as medicinal rituals (gomondela) will be made. Chapter three This chapter focuses on the analysis showing the challenges which children who suspect their parents of witch-craft encounter. It looks at songs which depict a woman who hates in-laws, the disintegration of families through propaganda, the songs which show the <langer of trusting your friends more than other people and the songs which show division between brothers because of marnage. Chapter four This chapter looks at the songs whose themes are on the badness of a woman who is married with a child. Other songs to be analysed are about the person who runs away from his parents because he is educated. The chapter concludes by focusing on songs relating to Christian and traditional beliefs (African religion). Chapter five This chapter gives the summary, conclusion, findings and recommendations of the study.
