| dc.description.abstract | The transition of learners into Grade R, which is the first year of formal education in South Africa, is a significant turning point in a child’s academic journey. Early childhood education is crucial because it teaches young children lessons that foster personal growth, cultivate a positive attitude, and support cognitive development. The aim of this study was to explore Grade R teacher’s perspectives on learners’ transition with diverse pre-Grade R experiences into the Grade R classroom. The study adopted a qualitative research approach to gather more information, using Bronfenbrenner ecological theory, which elaborates on the complex interaction between children and their various environments. The population of the study comprised Grade R teachers in Nzhelele area, Limpopo province. A purposive sampling method was used to select eight teachers for this study from four schools with more than one Grade R class in Nzhelele area. Semi-structured interviews, research journaling and document analysis were used as data collection instruments and data were analysed thematically. The outcomes revealed that the transition of a learner who attended an early childhood education center differs from that of a learner who stayed at home. The findings revealed that the learners who went to early childhood education Centers are ready for schooling, establish good reading skills, and have already mastered basic knowledge because of early guidance. This study sought to establish the importance of early childhood education Centers so that children can have a smooth transition into Grade R. The study recommends to the Department of Basic Education transition factors for the development of policies that clearly articulate how learners, teachers, and schools can be supported during this critical phase of early childhood education. A policy that provides clear descriptions of what school readiness entails, what learners should be able to achieve cognitively, socially, and emotionally, and how learners with diverse pre-Grade R experiences can be supported to ensure that the transition runs smoothly. | |
