The Role of Christian Faith in Shaping Identity Formation Among Adult Children of Divorced Parents in Thohoyandou

Abstract

The process of parental divorce profoundly influences the emotional, spiritual, and psychological development of children, especially as they transition into adulthood. This study examines how Christian faith shapes the identity development of adult children from divorced families in Thohoyandou. Such adult children often contend with feelings of abandonment, diminished self-worth, and difficulties in managing their emotions, which may lead to issues such as depression and anxiety, as well as impact their sense of identity. This study aims to investigate the role of Christian faith in enhancing resilience and facilitating identity reconstruction after family disruption. Adopting a qualitative approach, the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with adult children of divorced parents, pastors, and Church counsellors from the Church of Jesus Christ (CJC) to gather insights into personal narratives of faith, healing, and identity to develop faith-based strategies to promote their healing and resilience. The findings of this study offer valuable insights for faith communities and mental health professionals, highlighting the significance of incorporating spiritual resources in helping individuals affected by parental divorce.
