Critical Analysis of the Role and Influence of Church Ministries Concerning Sexual Violence Phenomenon in South Africa: A Practical Theological Study

Abstract

Sexual violence is a pervasive and devastating issue in South Africa, with women and children bearing the brunt of its impact. The country is plagued by alarmingly high rates of gender-based violence (GBV), including rape, domestic abuse, and sexual harassment. The consequences of sexual violence are far-reaching, affecting survivors' physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, as well as their social and economic stability. Despite the existence of laws and frameworks aimed at combating gender-based violence (GBV), the problem persists in South Africa. Given the significant presence of Christianity in the country, with over 80% of the population identifying as Christians, faith-based organisations, particularly churches, have a critical role to play in shaping cultural attitudes and behaviours that can help prevent and respond to sexual violence. However, the church's role in addressing GBV is complex, with some churches being criticised for perpetuating harmful gender norms and silencing survivors, while others have taken proactive steps to support survivors and promote gender justice. This study seeks to explore the role and impact of church ministries in addressing sexual violence in South Africa, with a particular focus on community education, victim care, and GBV prevention. Through a qualitative research approach, incorporating case studies of churches with gender justice programs, this study seeks to provide a nuanced understanding of how faith-based organisation can effectively prevent and respond to sexual violence. By examining the challenges and successes of church ministries, this research aims to inform policy and practice, ultimately contributing to a safer and more just society for all.
