Examining the extent to which rural-based universities adopt cultural diversity during the allocation of students’ accommodation: A case study of the University of Venda

Abstract

Amid increasing global recognition of cultural inclusion as a cornerstone of higher education, this study investigates how rural-based universities, specifically the University of Venda, adopt cultural diversity in the allocation of student accommodation. A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected from 20 purposively selected participants, 15 students, and 5 residence staff who were familiar with the dynamics of culturally diverse living arrangements. Representation from various cultural backgrounds was prioritised to ensure a broad diversity of perspectives. Data were gathered using open and closed-ended questionnaires distributed via email to ensure accessibility and inclusivity. The closed-ended data focused primarily on participants’ demographic information, and tables were used to present contextual findings. Data generated from the open-ended questionnaire were analysed using thematic analysis, and the process was supported by ATLAS.ti 23. The researcher then systematically coded the data, clustered related codes into categories, interpreted emerging themes from participants’ narratives, and presented them through a network diagram. Findings reveal that although the University of Venda admits students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, significant challenges, including language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, stereotyping, identity conflict, and inadequate institutional support, limit the full realisation of inclusive student accommodation. Fostering cultural diversity in student accommodation not only enhances student well-being and academic success but also helps build empathetic, inclusive campus communities. The study recommends future research to assess the long-term impact and scalability of such strategies across various higher education institutions.
