Same-sex marriage has been a subject that has been heavily discussed and argued since the concept of same-sex marriage came into existence. Same-sex marriage is a relationship that most people around the world are entitled to and is a fundamental right. Therefore, marriage, whether it is between a heterosexual or a homosexual couple, remains a fundamental right enjoyed by all. The study aimed to explore the influence of cultural beliefs on same-sex marriages at Vhembe District Municipality in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. A qualitative research approach and explorative design were used to solicit data for the study. The study's semi-structured interviews were used to collect data at Vhembe District. Couples in same-sex marriages, and focus groups such as religious leaders, cultural leaders and community leaders participated in the study. Thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data on the influence of cultural beliefs on same-sex marriages. This analysis provided deep insights into the cultural dynamics at play, allowing for a nuanced understanding of how tradition and modernity intersect in African societies regarding same-sex unions. The implication of the study was used to determine the extent of cultural beliefs’ influence on same-sex marriages in the Vhembe District. The influence was used to develop a model aimed at demystifying the negative influence of cultural beliefs on couples in the same-sex marriage of Vhembe District. The findings of this study revealed the complexity of culture and sexuality. The study also found that community perception and gendered cultural expectations in marriages as other factors that influence cultural beliefs on same sex marriages in the Vhembe district. Furthermore, the study suggested that educational and public awareness campaigns should be implemented to promote inclusivity and challenge discrimination. Traditional and religious leaders were also encouraged to engage in constructive LGBTQ+ conversation for re-examining and interpretations of sacred texts within their communities.
