Abstract
The exodus of youth from the church is a pressing concern globally and in South Africa, with far-reaching implications for church leaders, communities, and young Christians. This trend is characterised by a significant decline in church attendance and participation, resulting in a loss of spiritual vitality and community engagement. The study aimed to explore the underlying challenges contributing to youth attendance disengagement in Gandlanani village, seeking to understand the experiences and perspectives of church leaders, youth workers, and the youth themselves. By exploring the complexities of this issue, this research provides insight into the factors contributing to this phenomenon and identifies effective strategies for retention. This study employed a qualitative research approach, utilising semi-structured interviews with church leaders, youth workers, adult observers and youth to gather rich, contextual data. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns and themes within the data, thereby providing a nuanced understanding of the issue. The findings will inform church leadership practices, enhance youth ministry, and promote spiritual growth among young Christian people. Ultimately, this study will contribute to existing research and provide practical recommendations for church strategies to retain youth and foster a vibrant, inclusive faith community.
