dc.description.abstract Drug shortage is a global issue and is growing progressively. Drug shortage has become a big concern issue worldwide for healthcare providers. Purpose The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the perception of healthcare professionals regarding the shortage of medications at a selected hospital in the Vhembe district of Limpopo province. Research approach and design The researcher used a qualitative, descriptive, explorative and contextual research design. The population of this study was professional nurses, doctors, and pharmacists. The participants were selected through non-probability, purposive sampling and the sample size was determined by data saturation. Data collection methods An unstructured interview was used as a method of data collection and the central question directed it. The researcher did a pre-test study at a selected hospital to test the applicability of the research. Data were analysed using Tesch’s method. The researcher considered measures to ensure trustworthiness. Main findings The findings of this study reflect other studies that were conducted worldwide, and it demonstrates that patients are affected when there is a shortage of medications. en_ZA
